The Overland Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via the Kerlung route is a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage experience that takes you on a journey to the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet. Starting in Kathmandu, Nepal, the trek takes you through the beautiful landscapes of Tibet, crossing high altitude passes and rugged terrain. The 13-day Yatra is considered to be the most challenging of the routes, but also the most rewarding and spiritual.

Mount Kailash is a majestic mountain that stands at 6,714 meters (22,022 ft) tall. It is located in the western part of Tibet and is considered the holiest mountain in Asia. The mountain has four faces, each made of a different type of rock: crystal, gold, lapis lazuli, and white marble. The mountain is considered to be the axis of the world and is said to be the spiritual center of the universe. It is believed that the mountain is a sacred place where the gods reside and it is said that a single circuit of the mountain is equivalent to one full year of repentance, and 108 circuits is said to bring about salvation.

In Hinduism, Mount Kailash is considered to be the abode of the god Lord Shiva and is believed to be the center of the universe. It is said that Lord Shiva resides at the summit of the mountain along with his consort Parvati and their two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Hindus believe that a visit to Mount Kailash can wash away one's sins and purify the soul. It is said that a single circuit of the mountain, which is about 52 km long, is equivalent to one full year of repentance, and 108 circuits is said to bring about salvation.

Jains believe that the mountain is the site where the first Jain Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha, attained enlightenment. According to Jain tradition, Rishabhanatha, also known as Adi Nath, was the first of the 24 Tirthankaras (saints) in Jainism, who are considered to be the spiritual leaders and teachers of the faith. Rishabhanatha is said to have attained enlightenment at the summit of Mount Kailash, and Jains believe that making a pilgrimage to the mountain is a way to connect with the spiritual energy of the Tirthankara and to gain insight and enlightenment. The mountain is also considered to be the site of the Astapada, which is a sacred place where the Tirthankaras attained enlightenment. It is said that by visiting the Astapada, one can gain insight into the nature of reality and the true nature of the self.

Buddhists believe that Mount Kailash is the home of the Buddha Demchog and his consort Dorje Phagmo. According to Buddhist tradition, Demchog is a tantric deity associated with the practices of highest yoga tantra and is believed to reside in the pure realm of Kailash. He is also considered as one of the most important deities in the pantheon of Tibetan Buddhism. It is believed that by visiting Mount Kailash, one can connect with the spiritual energy of the Buddha Demchog and gain insight and enlightenment.

According to Bon tradition, Mount Kailash is considered to be the sacred nine-story Swastika Mountain, and it is believed that a visit to the mountain can bring good fortune and prosperity. The mountain is considered to be a site of spiritual power and many Bon followers believe that by visiting the mountain and performing rituals there, one can connect with the spiritual energy of the mountain and gain insight and enlightenment. In Bon tradition, it is believed that the mountain is the abode of the sky god Sipe Lingpa and it is said that a visit to the mountain can bring blessings from the god.

People believe that by visiting the mountain and performing rituals there, one can gain spiritual merit, or punya, which can help to purify the soul and bring about spiritual practice, which may include meditation, chanting, and other spiritual disciplines. The journey to the mountain is typically completed on foot and can take several days to complete. It is considered to be a challenging and difficult journey due to the high altitude and remote location of the area.

The nearby Lake Manasarovar is a high-altitude freshwater lake located near the base of Mount Kailash. The lake is believed to be the source of the four major rivers of Nepal & India the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali. In Hinduism, Lake Manasarovar is considered to be the site where the god Brahma created the world, and it is believed that bathing in the lake can wash away one's sins and purify the soul. It is also believed to be the home of the Hindu god Shiva, and it is said that a dip in the lake can bring about salvation. In Buddhism, the lake is considered to be the site of the palace of the demon king Rahu and is believed to be the place where the Buddha Demchog and his consort Dorje Phagmo reside. The lake is also considered to be a site of spiritual power, and it is said that a pilgrimage to the lake can bring about spiritual insight and enlightenment. Jains also consider the lake to be a sacred place, and it is believed to be the site where the first Jain Tirthankara attained enlightenment. In Bon religion, the lake is considered to be the site of the nine-story Swastika Mountain, and it is believed that a visit to the lake can bring good fortune and prosperity.

Lake Rakshas Tal, is a high altitude saltwater lake. Many people believe that the lake is a dangerous place and that it is best to avoid it.  It is said that bathing in the lake can help to protect one from the negative effects of Rahu's influence. It is not uncommon for people to be afraid of touching the water of the lake, as it is said to be the dwelling place of Rahu and the negative energies he represents.Additionally, Lake Rakshastal is also considered to be a site of spiritual power, and it is said that meditating at the lake can help to bring about spiritual growth. It is believed that the lake is a powerful place, which can be both positive and negative and that not everyone is ready to handle its power.

Another kunda is The Gauri Kunda, which is located near Mount Kailash. It is said to be the site where the goddess Gauri, the consort of Lord Shiva, bathed and it is believed that bathing in the kunda can bring good fortune and prosperity.

Similarly, there are other kundas such as Ashokasundari kunda, and Surya kunda, believed to have special significance in in difftent religions. Pilgrims typically make a circuit of the kundas and Mount Kailash as part of their spiritual practice, which is known as the Kailash Kora.

The Kailash Kora, also known as the Kailash Parikrama, is a spiritual pilgrimage circuit of Mount Kailash, The circuit typically involves walking around the mountain, and it is considered to be a challenging and difficult journey due to the high altitude and remote location of the area. The Kora is typically completed on foot and can take several days to complete. Pilgrims typically begin the journey at the village of Darchen, which is located near the base of the mountain, and they make their way around the mountain in a clockwise direction. Along the way, there are several sacred sites that are visited as part of the Kora, including the Manasarovar Kunda, Gauri Kunda, and other kundas, which are considered to be sacred ponds or pools. The Kailash Kora is considered to be a physically and mentally demanding journey, and it is said that a single circuit of the mountain, which is about 52 km long, is equivalent to one full year of repentance, and 108 circuits is said to bring about salvation.

Because of  its religious significance and its remote location, the Chinese government has placed restrictions on the number of people who are allowed to make the journey to Mount Kailash each year. The area around the mountain is also closed to foreigners and requires a special permit to enter.

The Overland Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is organized for the group size of 25 and above and travelers are required to apply for the Yatra and obtain necessary permits from the India Nepal and Chinese Governments.
